The 5 Most Important Things to Look For in a job as an Actor:
I can recall as an actor getting a call the same day and having to be there an hour later. How do I tell my boss that I need to leave when this is the 3rd time since I started working at this call center?? Will I even have a job to come back to? But wait! This commercial audition could mean a whole years' salary..what do I do?
We all know that stress never looks good on the face and as actors we need to stay young as long as possible right?
Well, I'd like to share with you the Best way to make an income from home and yet still have the time and freedom to pursue your beloved dream of being a full-time or famous actor. Here are the 5 things to look for when seeking outside income as an Actor or Actress
1. You want to find a job or income opportunity that is SCRIPT-DRIVEN. This is important because this will keep you in the mindset of being an actor. We learn in acting class to get away from the script, to learn to improvise through the script. So, it's very helpful to continue to exercize that muscle. You'll also find that even as you are reading a script, you will still need to learn to listen and customize your presentation to the person you are speaking with. A script-driven job or business will keep you on your toes and prepare you for your auditions and performances believe it or not.
2. You want to find something that is linked in some way to the TELEVISION or Film Industry. I think this goes without saying. When you are aligned with a company or business that is linked to your industry, it keeps you in the mindset you need to be in. Your business partners and fellow-employees are privy to information that can help to serve your career both now and later on down the road. There may even be hidden opportunities for you to exercize your skill in performance and be seen by the right people!
3. The ideal income opportunity will be about HEALTH/WELLNESS. Most people know that the Wellness Business is the next Trillion-Dollar Industry and the majority of educated persons are seeking more natural cures. If you are smart, you will go where the $ is. Another fringe benefit of being aligned with a Wellness business is that you are in an industry that thrives on Image. Your image will be a direct result of how healthy you are. As you are helping others to consume healthier alternatives to their traditional medicines, you are learning about how to care for your most valuable asset to your career, your body!
4. Make sure that your company will allow you the opportunity to NETWORK! As you already know, networking is very important for the actor. You want to be able to connect with other actors and artists that are in the same boat as you are as well as beyond you in their careers. Although we may feel it's unfair, isn't it true that alot of things in our career can come down to 'who you know' and 'who knows you'?
5. The ideal opportunity for actors to make money on the side of their careers is HOME-BASED. The reason that you need a home based job is obvious. You will be called for auditions and the most inconvenient of times. There is no way you can realistically hold a 9-5 position or temp/substitue work without missing significant time away. There are many companies that claim to be home-based, but they are truly not designed to make you money unless you are out in the 'field' or spending massive hours bugging friends and family. |
